Wigan Athletic vs Arsenal Match Preview

Wigan were the dominant side in their match against Portsmouth on Wednesday but despite facing up against a team that is so beset with injuries that manager Avram Grant was forced to make eight changes from the Pompey squad that beat Tottenham in the FA Cup Semi-Final at the weekend, the best the Latics could manage was a share of the points.

The single point they attained cannot hurt them, but with his club sitting just five points above the relegation zone, Wigan manager Roberto Martinez must have been counting on the three points potential that an under strength Portsmouth afforded.
But the Latics were ineffective up front and their attacking efforts put too little pressure on Pompey ‘keeper Jamie Ashdown.

Points squandered, Wigan now face trouble. They meet a wounded Arsenal at home this weekend, but the following two weeks they’ll be pitted against fellow strugglers West Ham (away) then Hull City at home. Wigan’s final match of the season is away to Chelsea.

A Wigan loss this weekend, if combined with a Burnley or Hull win, would put the Latics deeper into the dangerous waters of possible relegation, and would make their upcoming matches massive indeed.

When Arsenal last met Wigan, at the Emirates Stadium in September, the Gunners walked away with a 4-0 victory.

It’s a different Arsenal that travels to the DW Stadium this weekend. Coming off a 2-1 defeat to North London rivals Tottenham on Wednesday, the Gunners are a team whose Premier League championship ambitions are now in tatters.

Striker Robin van Persie finally returned to the team after five months out with an ankle injury but even his presence couldn’t inspire the club to a win over Spurs.

Yet the return of van Persie, cannot offset the litany of other injuries the Gunners are suffering at the moment.

They are without the services of midfield maestro Cesc Febregas, who is out for the season with a leg fracture. Young Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey is also out for the season after a horrific leg break against Stoke City. Defender William Gallas is out for the season, too, due to a calf injury.

Andrei Arshavin, Johan Djourou, Keiran Gibbs and Alexandre Song are all in various stages of recuperation too, although they are all scheduled to be available before season’s end.

Clearly Arsenal are a squad far from full strength. Nevertheless, they’ll be unlikely to drop points to Wigan this weekend.
