Liverpool vs West Ham United Match Preview
Liverpool’s 56 points currently leave them six shy of fourth place Manchester City going into the weekend. But whether that deficit remains static depends on the results of Manchester City’s derby match against Manchester United on Saturday.Liverpool could find themselves trailing City by as many as nine points come Monday when they host West Ham at Anfield.
Statistically it’s still possible for manager Rafa Benitez’s Reds to reach fourth. It’s highly unlikely now, though, despite Benitez’s “guarantee” earlier in the season.
Further denting Liverpool’s Premier League aspirations is the latest knee injury to Spanish international striker Fernando Torres, who missed last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Fulham at Anfield.
Although their domestic campaign has been a shambles this season Liverpool still fight on in the Europa League and have reached the semi-finals of that tournament. Having undoubtedly consigned themselves to a position somewhere lower than fourth in the Premier League they’ll be applying their focus mainly to the possibility of silverware that Europe now holds for them.
The Reds will meet Torres’s former club Atletico Madrid in the semi’s of the Europa League later this month. Given the importance the Europa League now has for Liverpool’s season, and Benitez’s legacy, it would come as no surprise if Torres were allowed to convalesce peacefully until that match.
Were he consulted on the matter West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola would undoubtedly recommend that Rafa Benitez give Fernando Torres all possible rest, especially if it prevents the Spaniard from playing against West Ham!
West Ham are 17th in the league table, just four points above the relegation threshold, and need every point they can get from their remaining matches to avoid relegation. Coming off a timely 1-0 victory over Sunderland at Upton Park last weekend, West Ham’s chances against Liverpool would be enhanced markedly were Torres to be rested.
The Hammers lost 2-3 to the Reds in their last Premier League encounter in September at Upton Park. Their chances of avenging that loss are currently diminished somewhat through injuries.
Boa Morte (knee), Collison (knee), Hines (knee), Ilunga (undisclosed tendon), and Tomkins (ankle). Keiron Dyer is questionable also, and Scott Parker is suspended.
