Portsmouth vs Aston Villa Match Overvew
Suffice to say that Portsmouth are in the strange position of contesting the FA Cup Final in May while simultaneously they find themselves relegated to the League Championship. On top of that there is the possibility they may play in Europe next year.Indeed, by virtue of their place in the FA Cup Final their berth in the Europa League ought to be assured. However, it seems that the fiscal incompetence that has driven the club into financial administration is matched by a clerical incompetence that somehow caused them to neglect their application for entry into the European competition. Stunning!
No less stunning was Pompey’s 0-2 victory over Tottenham at Wembley last weekend. Although Spurs were the better side it’s hard to grudge manager Avram Grant and his men the win given their sense of purpose in the face of the financial fiasco that has swirled around them this season.
Against Wigan on Wednesday Grant made eight changes to his FA Cup side, and included youngsters from the club’s academy. Still they held Wigan to a 0-0 draw.
Coming into the Villa game this weekend Grant has nothing to lose and if injuries to name players persist he’s likely to give the youngsters additional experience playing in the top flight.
Last time Villa and Portsmouth played in the league Villa took the honors 2-0 at Villa Park. Villa come into this weekend’s match at Fratton Park with only one win in their last five league matches.
Although they had contested for the number four league position all season, their poor form lately, and their 2-2 draw with Everton on Wednesday in particular, has frozen them out of the fourth spot and any hopes of Champions League play next season.
Europa League play is still a possibility for Villa, however, although they’d have to maintain their current seventh in the league and hope that Portsmouth’s appeal to UEFA for entry into the Europa League, which they failed to apply for initially, is declined.
Thus it must be said that although Villa were fighting for fourth place and Champions League football just a few days ago, they are now playing to finish seventh or higher.
