Sisters defend their crown

Cara and Huber plays against the Williams sisters

Serena and Venus Williams have successfully defended their Australian Open 2009 women’s doubles title by defeating No. 1 seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber in straight sets on Friday.

The Zimbabwean/American duo battled hard throughout the match, but the aggression from the American sisters proved too much as they prevailed 6-4 6-3 to claim their fourth Australian Open championship.

It was a fruit-fusion of colours at Rod Laver Arena for Friday’s final; the Williams sisters were in lemon and lime outfits, while the Black/Huber uniform resembled a lychee.

The crowd witnessed the first three games go to the serving team. A remarkable fourth game of the match saw Serena forced to serve for almost 15 minutes, with skills from all players on show that mirrored the brightness of the outfits.

Huber was returning with perfect cross-court placement, while Venus’ response was to shoot off winners in the hope this would win the marathon game, but Black had other ideas. On break point she sent a deep return at Serena’s feet, surged into the net and released a drop volley that Serena failed to retrieve, giving Black/Huber an early 3-1 lead.

It seemed Serena did not like her serve being broken one bit. She took her on-court aggression to another level and single-handedly broke back in the next game. With Serena’s aggression clearly beginning to dominate the match, Huber tried to avoid her, but Venus realised that Black was not going to be intimidated by Serena and subsequently tried to avoid her.

The cat-and-mouse battle continued throughout the latter stages of the set, but the No.1 seeds failed to gain the break they needed. When Black sent a forehand into the net, she handed the set to the sisters 6-4.

The aggression continued in the second set, but this time Venus came out with guns blazing as the sisters clearly aimed to catch their opponents off-guard and get the early break of serve in the second set.

The break came as Venus completely dominated play, this time with aggressive volleys, and was even seen ‘guarding’ the net for a few more seconds after a point had finished as if to demonstrate that she had everything under control.

“I was really focused and my serve was really working today and I got away with a few second serves,” Venus said.

“They played really well, they played really well as a team. They were coming in to the net and did everything right. They really did play like the number one team.”

Although Black and Huber never conceded, the result was never in question after that, and the Williams sisters won the second set and the match 6-3.

The sisters laughed after the match back at their seats as Venus did not realise they had already won the title.

“I actually didn’t know the score; I thought it was 5-2. I really don’t know how I lost track - I was a little confused – I guess I was just focused,” she said.

“I thought [Serena] was real happy with that break; I thought I had never seen her this happy, but I’ll run with it.”

Rafael Nadal
Biography of the Unbreakable

Nicknamed "Rafa", Rafael Nadal has took the tennis world by storm over the past 5 years as he has made his way on the professional tennis circuit to number 2 in the world with a staggering clay-court winning streak of 60 consecutive matches.
He was born June 3rd 1986 in Manacor, Mallorca to Sebastián and Ana María. He has great sporting heritage as his Uncle is former F.C. Barcelona footballer Miguel Ángel Nadal. Between 1986 and 2001 (the year in which he turned pro at only age 15) he developed a brilliant all round game playing left-handed despite being naturally right-handed.

His rise since then has been a quick and exhilarating one. In 2002, he won his first ATP match at Majorca at the age of 15, defeating Ramon Delgado to become the ninth player in the Open Era to win an ATP match before his 16th birthday. One year later in 2003 he became the second-youngest player to be ranked among the world's top 100 singles players and earned ATP Newcomer of the Year. At his Wimbledon debut, at only age 16, he became the youngest player to reach the 3rd round since 16-year-old Boris Becker in 1984 and in July 2003 he reached the Spanish championships where he lost to Lopez.

He continued to improve in 2004 and by 2005 had climbed the world rankings to number 5. This made him the youngest player to make it into the Top 10 since Andrei Medvedev in 1993. During this season he won two ATP Masters Series events in Monte Carlo and Rome and managed an astonishing winning streak of 25 consecutive matches.

Among his other historical achievements he became the fourth-youngest Roland Garros champion in the Open Era defeating Argentina's Mariano Puerta in the final, the seventh player to win a Grand Slam in his first appearance at the event and the first teenager to win a Grand Slam since Pete Sampras won the 1990 US Open at age 19.

During this period the intense rivalry between Nadal and Federer continued to grow reaching a climax in 2006 where Nadal beat Federer four times. First, on March 4, 2006, at the final in Dubai, where he won 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Nadal then defeated Federer again at the Monte Carlo Masters 6-2 6-7 6-3 7-6 before meeting and beating him for a third time in this season at the finals in Rome where he won a close victory - 6-7 7-6 6-4 2-6 7-6.

Their last encounter came at the finals in the French Open. Federer now sought to turn around his dismal record against Nadal, while Nadal was seeking to defend his French Open title. In the least competitive of their 2006 matches Nadal won a 4 set victory and will enter the next French Open with a perfect 14-0 tournament record.

Rafael Nadal photo

Rafael Nadal has won his second Roland Garros title one week ago (at the time of writing this article). He also holds the record of 60 consecutive wins on clay in the Open era.

Who is this remarkable young man and what can we learn from him?

His biography reveals to us that his career started as a typical successful tennis pro. He started to play at a very young age of four and tennis was already big in his family. His uncle Tony was his first and long time coach.

Another important fact is that Rafael Nadal's other uncle Miguel Angel Nadal is a former professional soccer player which probably influenced young Rafael's view on sports and competing - namely playing a sport professionally.

What can you learn?

Family and closest friends and coaches have a lot of influence on young players. Rafael was directed and guided towards professional sport from his early years. This enabled him to be focused on success and high performance.

Another interesting fact is that since Rafael Nadal is from Mallorca, he often practiced with Carlos Moya. Carlos was a role model for many young players since he won his only Grand Slam title French Open in 1998. He also became the first Spaniard in the Open era to hold Nr. 1 ranking in 1999.

So Rafael Nadal was greatly honored when Carlos Moya offered his help in guiding the young motivated competitor through the battles of ATP tour. Nadal undoubtedly learned a lot from Moya and these years of practicing with Carlos sure proved to be extremely influential on his game and his approach.

What can you learn?

Having a mentor who has gone through the tough times on the tour is a fantastic asset. There are many traps and mistakes that a young player can make and lose his focus. If you are guided by a champion you are much more likely to become one too.

His results at the early age of 15 (in 2001) already showed great potential and talent – Rafael won his first ATP match and went 37-3 in Futures (lower tier of ATP tour) winning six titles in all.

By the age of 17 he was already in the top 50 in the world and reached the third round in Wimbledon trailing only Boris Becker (aged 16) in that record.

In 2004 at the age of 18 Nadal won his first ATP title and won the Davis Cup title for his country.

But 2005 was his breakthrough year when he won his first French Open title and 4 Masters Series tournaments. He won all together 11 titles and finished the year at Nr. 2 behind Roger Federer.

He continued his fantastic run on clay in 2006 where he is still undefeated and is now holding a record of 60 consecutive wins on clay surpassing the previous record of Guillermo Vilas. What can you learn?

Rafael Nadal is not afraid of big names in tennis. He entered the ATP arena at the very young age and could be easily intimidated by all the titles and successes of his opponents. But Nadal just sticks to his »never say die« attitude and fights to the end.

He plays the ball not the opponent.

Another fantastic achievement of young Rafa is that he holds an incredible record against an incredible player – Roger Federer. Nadal has won 6 of 7 matches they played including the finals on hard court this year in Dubai.

Not only that – Nadal won 4 of those matches in the finals of the tournament where Federer has a fantastic record of 37 wins and only 13 losses.

What can you learn?

Nadal is still ranked nr. 2 in the world but he is not even remotely convinced that that's how things should be. He never plays as nr. 2 against Roger, he always goes for the win and that's why he has this outstanding record.

Do not believe the numbers, that's only some computer program doing its job. Always play to win – regardless of who you play.

Rafael Nadal picture Rafa plays a fighting, persevering and mentally tough tennis game. Although he admitted of having nerves in this year's Roland Garros final he pushes through that fear with courage and determination.

Rafael Nadal is prepared to work hard and long for his success (try and find a shirtless picture of him…). He is not looking for shortcuts and he is a true mental winner that we can all learn from.

I am convinced that this article will have to be updated frequently to show his progress and great achievements of young Rafa...

Manchester United Info

Manchester United Crest

Manchester United Crest

The club has produced some of the most historic, and recognizable names in football. Matt Busby, Bobby Charlton, Alex Ferguson, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Christiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, just to scratch the surface.

Manchester United are popularly known as The Red Devils, Man U, or Man United.

Manchester United Stadium

The home of the Red Devil’s is Old Trafford, and has been since 1910. The stadium has also been given the name, "The Theatre of Dreams," by Manchester United’s famous manager Sir Matt Busby. The stadium itself has had an intriguing history. At the beginning of World Ward II, it was used as a depot for the army, and football competition continued there just as before. Then, in December 1940, it was damaged by a German air raid. Play was temporary moved until the following March, when only a few days later it was bombed a second time, rendering it useless. Man U did not play anymore games at Old Trafford until it was repaired in 1949.

After years of rebuilding and renovation, Old Trafford has become biggest stadium of any English Premier League team, with 76,212 seats. Old Trafford is a 5-star rated, "Elite" UEFA stadium, meaning it meets the high standards of UEFA to hold the Champions League Final.

Man U’s history begins in 1878 when the club was formed, and known then as Newton Heath L&YR F.C., a worker’s football team from Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. In 1902 the team fell into financial turmoil, until a large investment by J.H. Davies, a local brewer, saved the club. They started fresh, with a new name: Manchester United.

Manchester United Manager

Sir Alex Ferguson is the current manager of Manchester United. Before his managing days, he was a striker with several professional teams throughout Scotland. His managing career began in 1974, at the relatively early at the age of 32. Ferguson earned ?40 a week for managing East Stirlingshire. From there he quickly moved up the ranks, joining more prestigious clubs. By 1985 he was chosen as manager of Scotland’s national team.

Fergie’s stint as Scotland’s manager was short lived, as he took over the managerial duties at Manchester United in 1986. It was a slow start, but soon, with Sir Alex at the helm, Man U began to flourish. During his career at Manchester Utd., Ferguson has won the English Premier League eleven times, the League Cup three times, the FA Cup five times, the Champions League twice, and many other various championship wins. In the 1998-99, under his leadership, the Red Devils won the Treble, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League, a feat never accomplished by any other club. He was knighted in 1999 and inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.

Man United have won 18 domestic league championships, tying them with Liverpool for the most. They have also won many other honours, both domestically and internationally.

Since the new beginning in 1902, Man U has had a few struggles, but that is overshadowed by their enormous success.
Between World War I and World War II the team juggled between victory and failure, moving back and forth from the first division to the second division. After WWII, the team has been nothing short of spectacular, being regulated from the top division only once.

Manchester United F.C. is a football club playing in the English Premier League. They are one of the most popular and successful football teams in the world, as well as the richest of any sport.

Man City F.C. Brief Summary

Manchester City F.C. Crest

Manchester City F.C. Crest

It has been a LONG time since the Manchester City Football Club was an elite side. And the stay in the rarified air was short.

But supporters are extremely hopeful that the Blues will break into the Premier League’s top four in the 2009-10 season.

City won its second of two championships of England’s top flight – the old First Division – in 1967-68 and its fourth of four FA Cups in 1969.

Then in 1970, City won the first of its two League Cups and its only Europe silverware — the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

After finishing 10th in the Premier League in 2008-09, manager Mark Hughes is using the vast wealth of the owner (since September 2008) – the Abu Dhabi United Group – to strengthen the Blues.

Four excellent players have been signed in the 2009 summer transfer window – striker Carlos Tevez (from Manchester United), striker Roque Santa Cruz (from Blackburn), striker Emmanuel Adebayor (from Arsenal) and central midfielder Gareth Barry (from Aston Villa).

In addition, Hughes is seeking to sign centre back Everton’s Joleon Lescott to bolster the defense.

The side was founded as St. Mark’s in 1880. That’s when St. Mark’s Church added football to cricket in its sports program.

For the 1892-93 season, the side — then named Ardwick — was a founding member of the Football League’s old Second Division. The name became Manchester City in 1894.

Of its 106 seasons in the Football League, City has been in the top flight (old First Division, now the Premier League) for 81 and in the second (old Second Division, now the Football League Championship) for 24.

Through 2008-09, City has two championships of the top flight (old First Division in 1937-38 and 1967-68) and six of the second (old Second Division in 1898-99, 1902-03, 1909-10, 1927-28, 1946-47, 1965-66).

City also has won four FA Cups (1904, 1934, 1956, 1969) and two League Cups (1970, 1976).

Manchester City Stadium

What is now City of Manchester Stadium was originally designed as part of Manchester’s failed bid in the early 1990s to host the 2000 Summer Olympics.

The stadium, also known as COMS and Eastlands, was built after Manchester was chosen to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

After the Commonwealth Games, the stadium was reconfigured for football. The track was removed. And the playing surface was lowered to accommodate a third tier of seats, which increased the capacity to 47,726.

The first Manchester City football match in the stadium that counted was a 5-0 UEFA Cup victory over TNS of Wales on August 14, 2003

Manchester City Manager

For "Sparky" Hughes, 2009-10 is his second season at City after leading Blackburn Rovers for four seasons — 2004-05 to 2007-08 — in the Premier League.

Blackburn’s best season under Hughes was 2005-06. The Rovers finished sixth in the Premier League and competed in the UEFA Cup.

Hughes also led Blackburn to the FA Cup semifinals in 2005 and 2007.

Hughes’ first job as a manager was from 1999 to 2004, leading the national team of his native Wales. He initially worked on a part-time basis while finishing his superb playing career, for which he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.

A centre forward, Hughes played for 16-plus of his 19 seasons — 1983-84 to 2001-02 — in England’s top flight. He is best known for 10 seasons at Manchester United in two stints — 1983-84 to 1985-86 and 1988-89 to 1994-95.
